Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman) is a little disillusioned. As the head of the Open Spaces Coalition, Albert preserves land through the power of poetry despite his charter’s disapproval. His sex life is nonexistent, his environmental activism is between a rock and a hard place, and he tussles over a lost relationship with his mother.
After continually spotting the same tall Sudanese man, he seeks the help of two married existential detectives in hopes that they can figure out the meaning behind his coincidence. But Vivian (Lily Tomlin) and Bernard (Dustin Hoffman) aren’t so quick to write Albert’s case off as mere happenstance. They’re concerned with more probing matters.
As Vivian and Bernard perform their quirky investigation into Albert’s life, spying on him at every, and yes that means every, moment, Albert’s life begins to unravel like the Universe at the moment of the big bang. And once golden boy Brad Stand (Jude Law) tries to steal Albert’s coalition from under his toes, Albert’s world is disassembled before his eyes.
With an excellent score from Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind), and a killer cast to boot, “I Heart Huckabees” is a must see film that introduces a myriad of perspectives. By the end, this existential comedy will have you asking yourself, “How am I not myself,” and who knows, maybe you’ll see the “blanket truth.”
But before you begin your descent into the hilarious philosophical abyss that is “I Heart Huckabees,” try this recipe for tofu tuna sandwiches. After all Brad Stand, Shania Twain is a vegetarian.
